Suzy Stathers had been on the receiving end of antisocial behaviour at her previous home in Oxfordshire and was desperate to feel safe. As her job was based in South Northants, Suzy thought a move to the area where she worked would be her best option.
In October last year, Suzy was given the keys to a one bedroomed bungalow in the quiet and picturesque village of Kings Sutton.
“Because of the harassment and victimisation I was suffering, I really didn’t feel safe where I was living before. I’d been on the receiving end of threats, had my windows broken, my locks superglued and even had my flat set fire to. It seemed no-one wanted to help and I got to the point of feeling suicidal.
“I cannot begin to tell you how relieved and pleased I was when Grand Union told me the news that I had somewhere safe to move to.
“I’d moved in before I even had any furniture or any heating. Me and my dog, Bobby, slept on the bathroom floor with the electric fan heater on.
“I’ve settled in really well and I’m so happy here. I can really relax.
“As well as Bobby, I have my two macaws, Lucy and Charlie, for company. Lucy isn’t always well behaved so has to stay indoors, but Charlie gets to go out and about. He’s been to the shops with me, and to the beach. He’s quite a talker and he’ll join in sometimes when I’ve got the radio on or I’m singing!
“I grew up in London, but for years I lived on a narrowboat on the Grand Union Canal. I loved it and would spend my summers there, but the winter was far too cold for Lucy and Charlie so I would go and stay at my son’s cottage in Wales.”
Suzy’s many hobbies include gardening, lace-making, collecting bobbins, making apple dolls, crochet and knitting.
“I’ve done a fair bit of knitting for this year’s Kings Sutton show and have won prizes before at the Banbury show. This year I’ve made a miniature house and garden with a vegetable patch, all hand-knitted.
“I also enjoy history and collecting Edwardian furniture. I can recommend visiting the tip at Farthinghoe; I’ve found some real bargains there!
“I love my home and I’m very appreciative of Grand Union for all they did for me. The staff were very understanding and more than helpful in finding me somewhere safe to live.”
