Electrical safety visit – FAQs

Is this check really that important?

Every five years we need to test all the wiring, sockets and any fixed fittings in your home to make sure they’re safe for you and your family to use.

By law, we have to carry out this test.

What’s in it for me?

If you don’t let us in to test your electrics, this puts you, and your family, at risk.

And for us, customers not being at home for their appointments costs us over £128,000 a year; that’s 51 new boilers, 25 new bathrooms or 21 new kitchens.

What does it involve?

The electrician will check your wiring, fuse box, sockets, other equipment and switches to make sure they meet current safety standards. If there’s anything unsafe, we can fix it before it causes any harm.

Is this check the same as an EICR?

Yes; that’s just a short way of saying an Electrical Installation Condition Report, the official name for this electrical safety check.

How often does it need doing and how long does it take?

Just two hours of your time every five years.

What if I can’t be home for the appointment you’ve given me? How easy is it to re-book?

That’s okay – just give us a call or drop us an email and let us know when’s convenient for you.

Appointments are available between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and sometimes we’re able to offer Saturday appointments.

What if I don’t let you in?

Because this testing is a legal requirement, not letting us in can be classed as a breach of your tenancy agreement. This could result in legal action, you losing your home, and even you paying us legal costs.

What rooms do you need to access?

Every room, including the loft, if you have one.

Do I need to move anything?

Only if furniture is blocking access to sockets or switches. Our team can help move some items, if necessary.

Do I need to unplug everything?

Yes please.

I have medical equipment that needs an electrical supply to work – what about that? everything

Please contact us before your check is carried out, so we can discuss your options.

What about my fridge and freezer?

If you keep the fridge and freezer doors closed during the time they’re switched off, the contents won’t be affected.

Will you test my appliances, like my kettle or iron?

No, we won’t be testing any appliances that you would plug into sockets.

I’ve got a pre-paid meter, does that matter?

You’ll need to make sure you have credit on the meter before our visit.

What if I haven’t had time to tidy up?

We’re not inspecting your home for tidiness or cleanliness. We’re just making sure your electrics are safe.
