Now might be a good time to switch to a smart meter

Smart meter in kitchen of home

(If you havenโ€™t already done so.)

Why?

Well, the technology thatโ€™s used to run the old-style meters is becoming obsolete at the end of June. You may have heard it being called the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) switch-off. Homes with electric storage heaters are likely to be using this old technology, so itโ€™s important to consider a smart meter upgrade.

What do I need to do?

If your electricity supplier has already been in touch to discuss a smart meter, then you donโ€™t need to do anything. If they havenโ€™t, now would be a good time to contact them.

What will happen if I donโ€™t get a smart meter?

If you donโ€™t upgrade to a smart meter, your heating and/or hot water supply might be affected. Your heating may be left on continually, or off, and the charging-up might happen at the wrong time of day. Your electricity supplier wonโ€™t be able to say how much electricity youโ€™ve used during peak or off-peak times, so your bills could be much higher.
