Help with gardening

Our Assisted Gardening Scheme provides grass and hedge cutting for our older/disabled customers who are unable to do this for themselves.

We know that some customers struggle to maintain their garden and may not have anyone nearby who can help. This can become a problem so we provide an assisted gardening scheme that can help.

Please note that we currently have a waiting list.

You can still apply to the scheme and we will still process applications as and when they’re received. Where customers are eligible to join the scheme, we will add them to the waiting list, however no garden works will be carried out at their homes until we’re able to remove them from the waiting list and formally add them to scheme

Customers must fulfil certain criteria to be eligible for the scheme. You must:

  • be a customer living in a Grand Union property
  • be unable to carry out the work yourself
  • be aged 60 years or over or in receipt of Disability Benefit
  • be receiving a means tested benefit
  • have no-one living with you who could be reasonably expected to help
  • have no relatives within a 10 mile radius who could carry out the work
  • sign a declaration to say you’ll let us know if your circumstances change.

If you meet all of the above criteria, please complete the form at the bottom of this page.

What gardening help can we provide?

  • lawn mowing and strimming of edges 11 times per year (starting in April)
  • grass clippings are removed at every cut
  • hedge cutting twice a year (usually in May/June and September/October)
  • hedge trimmings are removed at every cut
  • the top of the hedge is trimmed if it is less than six feet high. If your hedge is over six feet high we can reduce the height if you agree. If you don’t agree, we can only cut the sides of the hedge
  • if the hedge is shared we can cut the top to centre-line only.

What gardening services do we not provide?

  • removing weeds
  • mowing ‘rough’ or weedy areas of grass
  • pruning, e.g. shrubs, roses, trees.
